A primary goal of KCDLP is to provide meaningful employment opportunities to the people of the KFN. This is achieved by investing in training and development programs for KFN citizens to build skill and capacity, in order to increase local employment and entrepreneurship.
How Can We Support Business Development?
We know that KFN People are mostly interested in starting a business and most of them need help with starting a business. What kind of help are they referring to?
This is what we heard from citizens:
- Training for handling start up funds, funding, financing
- Business training (example: BEST – Business Entrepreneur Skills Training with Native Canadian Centre of Toronto)
- If I pursue future business courses and education, I need help to get funding for that
- I need training on how to run a business, taxes that come with having a business, registering, etc.
- Training and education is my first priority
- I need help with small business training
- Cabinetry/carpentry workshops, we did this years ago and it was successful, as part of the KFN forestry programme.
- A cultural learning workshop centre something like the one in Anchorage or even like YuConstruct in Whitehorse.
- Sewing/beading – selling and providing workshops
- Language revitalization, cultural connection for community
- Running on-the-land cultural programs that help people with addictions/mental -health/healing Programs for traditional knowledge transfer (i.e. moose hunting, fish net)
- Educational goals and aspirations for teaching indigenous methods and knowledge on the land
- Labor force training and certifications
- Having a local community radio station – does not only one broadcaster can have rotational contract broadcasters – so many hours on weekdays.
- We tried to set up a Costumes for theatrical productions
