Community First

KCDLP relies on the support of the KFN community. It’s because of the community’s input and feedback that we’re able to channel meaningful support towards the projects people care about.

Our first job is to listen. That means conducting assessment and surveys, and involving the community in decision-making and project planning. Nothing happens without community engagement.

Here’s some of our community engagement work in action:

Support for Business Owners and Startups

The people of KFN are interested in starting and running their own business. In a recent survey, 65% of people indicated that interest. In addition, 75% said they’ll need help getting started.

In order to support the creation of new businesses, KCDLP supports business owners with planning, operational support, funding and training. Our Small Business Hub will directly support these startups. Have an idea for a business? Learn more about the KCDLP Business Equity Matching Fund (BEMF).

For the existing businesses of KFN, like The Kluane Energy Cafe or the KCDLP Office, we have a number of support services in place. With workshops and consulting services, we work directly with business owners in Burwash to help them improve their infrastructure, negotiation skills, decision-making, and operations.

More Job Opportunities & Training

Construction has been a major source of employment for KFN citizens, but the community is looking for more diversification. KCDLP is working to expand employment offerings into sectors like culture, outdoor recreation, health and wellness, mineral exploration, and tourism.

Going forwards, there will be numerous opportunities for cultural training and workshops, as voiced by the community. These include cabinetry workshops, sewing and beading, language revitalization, and on-the-land Indigenous teachings like healing, hunting and fishing.

Our goal is to help KFN citizens upgrade their skills, earn certifications, and find meaningful work in the community.

Housing & Infrastructure Projects

KFN citizens are interested in infrastructure projects that can bring prosperity and security to the community. The focus should be on smart, long-term planning. The right projects can provide jobs, housing and economic opportunity. Here are some examples:

  • KCDLP is committed to the continued building of houses and tiny homes in the KFN community. 1-2 houses per year on Fee Simple Lands is the goal.
  • The Kluane Training Center is geared towards adult workforce education, shared workspaces, and trades training. This project will include a permanent truck shop.
  • KCDLP is eager to contribute to major KFN projects like the new, boatlauch, housing, infrastructure, Highway construction projects.
  • Rent out vehicles and heavy equipment to the new school project and other KFN construction projects.

Land Use & Development

KCDLP works closely with the community to evaluate resource projects, land use proposals and new developments. Here are some examples:

  • KCDLP helps the KFN with land use plans and zoning for determining which mining and infrastructure projects will move forward. With the help of the community, we help outline how these companies interact with KFN. Providing local employment and safety training is always a top priority.
  • The land and infrastructure project to demolish the Burwash Landing Resort, develop the roads and trails around the property, and develop the Fee Simple Lot. The lot will require infrastructure development like power, roads, and surveying.
  • The Kluane Arctic Backhoe JV Realignment Initiative is a project in the Yukon with the long-standing Whitehorse-based excavation and remediation contractor. The company relies on regional, Indigenous expertise for their operations.
